Revenue Canada Harassment

The Canadian government, especially the Conservatives like to highlight all these great new tax deductions. There are already a good number of them we as Canadian taxpayers rely on year after year. But there is a cost...if you deduct too much, even when you are honest, they'll come and hound you.

I got a nice little letter today from Revenue Canada, I can't say it was completely unexpected. I got a nice refund last April, and I kind of knew the tax man would come sniffing around. However, I find the hoops I have to jump through a bit on the harassing side.

I have a 10-year old son, who I've been able to claim for years now as an elgible dependent, and enjoy all the normal deductions that apply. This year, they have asked for a lot of the same things they have been getting through the years, including his name, address, date of birth, relationship to me, net income, SIN number, and custody. This involves the bringing together of many documents, including utility bills to prove my address, written statements, and more.

What they don't realize is that I currently have a job, and a child to raise, which gives me little time to put aside to do their paperwork for them. If I was sitting on my duff all day collecting from them instead of paying to them, this wouldn' be an issue. They already have all of this information. This is a lot to expect from someone in terms of time and insult, I'm surprise they don't want blood tests.

I'll jump through their hoops though, I have no choice. I suppose it's not too much to ask of me, just so I can have the right to pay the income of career welfare recipients who don't pay taxes and get extra money for extra children that aren't actually mine.
